How to Potty Train a Cat

Updated on May 16, 2011

How to Toilet Train a Cat

There are plenty of cute videos featuring potty trained cats that are circulating the Internet. People are fascinated by these smart cats that can use the toilet just like a human. The potty trained cats are not smarter than the rest of the felines, but they have been trained well by their owners. It may seem too good to be true, but anyone can teach their cat how to go to the bathroom in the toilet rather than the litter box.

Paul Kunkel, who toilet-trained his first cat while in college and who has continued to train his own and his friends' cats ever since, presents a foolproof, 21-Day-Program for teaching any litter-trained cat between the ages of 6 months and 10 years to use a toilet instead of a litter box. (Older cats can still be trained, but the process will probably take longer.) Requiring nothing more than magazines and/or newspapers, masking tape, heavy-duty plastic wrap, and a supply of fresh litter, the plan begins with you placing the box next to the toilet and, after gradually raising it to the height of the seat, ends with the cat--well, using it like any other member of the family. For life.

Advantages of a Toiled Trained Cat

Stop changing kitty litter

There are many advantages to having a potty trained cat. Pet owners will no longer have to clean a stinky cat litter box and can save money on kitty litter purchases. Having a potty trained cat is particularly wonderful for people who live in a small apartment. After their cat is toilet trained, they will not have to worry about the unpleasant odor of the kitty litter making the whole apartment smell awful. A potty trained cat is also the perfect solution for pregnant women who should not clean the cat litter box during pregnancy to avoid toxoplasmosis.

Some people may doubt their cat's ability to learn how to use the toilet, but cats of all ages and breeds can be toilet trained. Potty training a cat is a fairly easy process for people and pets. Cats are intelligent animals, and with the right training, they can learn how to successfully use the toilet instead of the cat litter box.

Cat owners can begin the training process by moving the kitty litter box into the bathroom. The litter box should be uncovered. If cats are used to using a covered litter box, then they may need a couple of days to become familiar with the use of an uncovered box in the new area. Next, someone should place the kitty litter box on a small table, plastic container or stack of books to get the cat accustomed to using the litter box above the ground. It is best to raise the box up a few inches each day until it is at the same height as the toilet.

The cat should be able to gain access to the litter box by hopping up on the toilet. After a few more days, the litter box can be placed directly on the closed toilet seat. Once the cat becomes familiar with using the litter box on the toilet seat lid, a cat toilet training seat can be placed on the toilet. The training seat is filled with litter and must be cleaned whenever the cat uses the training seat. When the cat becomes comfortable with the training seat, the seat should be adjusted, and the litter eventually removed. It will not take long before the cat can use the toilet without the training seat. Some owners take the extra step of teaching their cat how to flush the toilet. Although it is not necessary to train the cat to flush after using the toilet, it can be extremely convenient for the owner if the pet learns how to perform the task.
